Fredericksburg, Va. – Democratic candidate Vangie Williams (VA-01) released the following statement on the Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act of 2018 that the House recently passed:
“I believe that our government needs to be fiscally responsible, and the Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act is far from it. Continuing to add to the federal deficit in order to benefit the wealthy does not help the majority of Americans.
“The Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act (PFSBTCA) would make the individual and estate tax cuts from last year’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent like the corporate tax cuts. According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, doing so would add almost $3.8 trillion to the federal budget deficit and mostly benefit high-income households.
“The biggest benefits will go to households making between $357,000 and $836,000 – the top 95-99 percent of income distribution. Those in the bottom 20 percent would only get a tax cut of about $100.
“Once again, Rep. Rob Wittman has voted against the interests of his own constituents. It’s almost as if our current representatives in the House have learned nothing from the what happened with the first Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Continuing to add to the deficit in order to use the debt as an excuse to cut valuable programs like Social Security and Medicare — benefits we’ve already paid for out of every paycheck — in the name of ‘balancing the budget.
“This is why I’m running for Congress. I want to represent all Americans, not just the super wealthy. Not only will I will fight those who want to cut Social Security and Medicare just to pay for tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, but I will work toward decreasing federal debt instead of adding to it in the name of special interests.”
