Fredericksburg, Va. – Democratic candidate Vangie Williams (VA-01) released the following statement on the recent proposals by the Environmental Protection Agency to roll back protections concerning fuel efficiency, power plants, mercury, and methane:
“I disagree with the Trump Administration’s proposed Affordable Clean Energy rule, which would lift carbon limits on power plants and allow states to write their own emissions guidelines instead of complying with the limits set forth in the Clean Power Plan that helps combat climate change.
“I also disagree with the decision to attempt to walk back efforts cutting methane and mercury emissions, as well as any attempts to return to lax vehicle emission and fuel economy standards.
“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged with protecting human health and the environment. Unfortunately, we have politicized science and undermined scientists whose purpose is to act in the best interest of public health and our environment. Under recent changes, the EPA seems to be acting in opposition of its intended purpose.
“We simply cannot continue to prioritize corporate profits at the expense of American health and our environment. Instead of excluding some of our most knowledgeable scientists on these matters as this Administration has done, we need to be consulting with these subject matter experts to understand how the rollback of previously established rules will truly affect our nation both today and in the future.
“I am running to represent the people of the 1st District of Virginia – not corporations. Unlike my opponent, Rep. Rob Wittman, who has a lifetime grade of an ‘F’ by the League of Conservation Voters, I care about the health and safety of 1st District residents and Americans everywhere. It’s why I take pressing environmental issues like climate change, clean energy, and air and water quality very seriously. They all impact our livelihood, health and safety.
“I know that environmental protection is economic protection, and that is just one reason, among many, that I find the recent actions of this Administration to be so appalling.”
