King George, VA. – Democratic candidate Vangie Williams (VA-01) released this statement on family separation at the border:
“I do not support the “zero-tolerance” immigration policy that has resulted in the separation of undocumented parents and children. Neither the administration nor Congressman Wittman have articulated a plausible reason for children to be taken from their parents. There is no legal framework requiring the government to separate families.
“It is still legal to seek asylum in this country. Families seeking asylum legally should be allowed to apply in a judicious manner and not be turned away at our borders, or forced to take other means to enter the country. Separating families should not be used as a deterrent for asylum seekers, and children should not be used as bargaining chips for public policy debate.
“The security of our nation should always be our top priority, but the inhumane enforcement of the policies implemented just last month violate every tenet of common decency and humanity regardless of your political views. This is not a partisan issue. This is a moral issue. And this is a crisis that can be ended with the stroke of a pen.”
