Today, Cedell Brooks Jr., a former King George County supervisor of 26 years, endorsed Vangie Williams for the Democratic party’s nomination in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Brooks adds to the growing list of elected officials and community leaders backing Williams’ candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I’m a lifelong resident of the 1st District and am deeply invested in what the future of the district will look like,” said Brooks. “I am a business owner, raised my family here and served on the King George County Board of Supervisors for 26 years. I know about the issues impacting residents and the priorities we have for communities. I can confidently say that Vangie is the best person to lead the district because she has a plan to move our community forward.”
“We need someone who knows the people, the culture and the issues in the district to effectively make the best decisions,” added Brooks. “Vangie is the only candidate that has the experience to lead and make the tough decisions that the job requires.”
Brooks – the owner of Cedell Brooks Funeral Home in Port Royal, Va. – was first elected to the King George County Board of supervisors at age 28, making him the youngest African-American elected to a county board in Virginia. He served as the chairman five times and was an advocate for the ‘little man’ – working to remove an old landfill and turning it into a park, ensuring residents had running water and senior residents had affordable housing.
“As a long-time resident of King George, having the endorsement of Cedell Brooks means a lot to me,” said Williams. “His service to the community has been instrumental in many achievements in the creation of public parks, capital infrastructure projects and growing our business community. I am inspired by his support and will fight for the future of Virginians.”
Williams is committed to fighting for an economy that works for everyone and ensuring families in the 1st District have access to world-class healthcare. Through investments in education and transportation, and by reinvesting in our communities, Williams aims to bring jobs to the 1st District and help our hometown heroes.
The groundswell of support for Williams is a sign that people want new leadership in Washington. Williams has received endorsements from members of the Senate of Virginia, the House of Delegates, national organizations, community leaders and citizens. Voters will make their choice on the Democratic candidate to face Rob Wittman in the general election in the primary election on June 12.
