Vangie Williams Beats Rob Wittman in Fundraising, FEC Filing Reveals

Fredericksburg, Va. – Congressional challenger Vangie Williams (D–King George) raised more money than 11-year incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman (R–Montross) according to recently released 3rd quarter Federal Election Commission reports. Williams raised $255,920 compared to Wittman’s $238,152. While Wittman has a much larger cash-on-hand amount compared to Williams, she has raised the most money of any Democratic candidate in the 1st District since 2010.

“There is significant momentum that is building behind Vangie,” said Joel Leonard, Campaign Manager for Vangie Williams. “The fact that we’re outpacing Rob Wittman’s fundraising is solid proof of that.”

Williams has stated time and time again that she’s running a people-funded campaign. In the 3rd Quarter, Friends of Vangie Williams raised nearly almost $250,000 from 2,109 individuals.  During that same period Rob Wittman raised just $89,496 from just 202 individuals, one of the lowest individual donor amounts of any congressional race in Virginia. The rest of Wittman’s contributions were from PACs and two contributions were directly from corporations.

“Wittman’s report is just further proof that he’s out of touch and on the ropes,” said Leonard.  Wittman’s report revealed that he has taken money from the tobacco industry, Dominion Energy, oil companies, defense contractors, insurance companies and far-right wing PACs that don’t represent the values of the people of the 1st District.

“Wittman likes to tout his environmental record but he takes money from some of the biggest polluters,” continued Leonard. “He tells people he wants quality affordable healthcare and turns around and takes money from insurance companies who want to limit coverage and raise premiums. His FEC report just confirms what we already know: Rob Wittman is bought and paid for by special interests.”

“I’m proud to be supported so broadly across the 1st District,” added Vangie Williams. “I’ve received contributions from every single county in the district because people know that I will represent them in Congress, not special interests like my opponent.”
