Susan Platt, former Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in Virginia, has endorsed Vangie Williams for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Platt adds to the growing list of community leaders backing Williams’ candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“It is with great enthusiasm that I am endorsing Vangie Williams for Congress for the 1st Congressional District in Virginia.
“Vangie was often seen as an underdog in the Democratic primary but emerged the victor because she connected with voters by talking about the issues that are important to them. She has a ‘get it done’ attitude and a fierce dedication to service that has informed her entire life. I know firsthand the toll that rising health care costs and addiction take on Virginia families, and so does Vangie. She is a proven leader who will fight for accessible, affordable health care for all Virginians, an economy that works for everyone, and will make sure that the federal government invests in our communities.
“There are a record-number of strong Democratic women running not just in Virginia, but nationwide. Women like Vangie are the key to flipping the House in November, and she will be an excellent representative for 1st District communities and families in the U.S. Congress,” said Platt.
Platt served as the chief of staff to former U.S. Senator Joe Biden and campaign manager for Senator Chuck Robb’s successful 1994 re-election campaign. A veteran political operative and lobbyist, Platt also founded Emerge Virginia which encourages and trains Democratic women to run for office. Since 1998, she has operated a political consulting firm under Susan S. Platt Consulting.
“Susan is a powerhouse in the political arena,” said Williams. “Her work has helped businesses grow and increase wages for workers throughout Virginia. Like myself, she is a major environmental advocate, promotes the welfare of our youth and wants to create a diverse economy that works for everyone. As an Emerge Virginia alumna, I am proud to receive the endorsement from the founder of the organization that has helped break down barriers for me to become the Democratic candidate in the 1st District and make history at the same time.”
Williams has received endorsements from Emerge America and the National Women’s Political Caucus, in addition to Senator Rosalyn Dance, Delegates Jennifer Carroll Foy and Luke Torian, as well as Senator Louise Lucas. Williams will face Rep. Rob Wittman in November for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District.
