Today, Senator Rosalyn Dance (D-16th) endorsed Vangie Williams, one of three Democrats running for the party’s nomination to challenge Rep. Rob Wittman (R) in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Senator Dance adds to the growing list of elected officials and community leaders backing Williams’ candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I believe in Vangie’s vision for economic development, education and healthcare for our communities,” said Dance. “Bringing good-paying jobs and prosperity to all Virginians requires strong leadership and experience to make that happen. Vangie will be a strong advocate for her district and I am proud to offer her my endorsement for Congress.”
“Her tenacity to solve problems and implement change cannot be underestimated,” added Dance.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Senator Dance,” said Williams. “She has faithfully served the people of Virginia for 26 years and is beloved by her constituents for the work she has done for our communities. I am committed to living up to the standard she has set for public service and surpassing expectations on Capitol Hill.
Sen. Dance was elected to the Senate of Virginia in 2014, making her the first African-American female senator from Petersburg. Prior to this historic moment, Dance served in the Virginia House of Delegates for eight years and as the mayor of Petersburg for 12 years. Her political career has been devoted to the economic vitality for every citizen, public and higher education, voting rights, seniors, veterans and access to affordable health care services.
Dance said she was inspired by Williams’ story as someone who overcame obstacles and now leads experts to work on our nation’s most critical projects. The senator noted similarities in her career path as a young wife and mother who went back to school to earn her nursing degree, and Williams earning four degrees all while working and being a mother and wife as well.
“Vangie’s story makes her relatable to people,” said Dance. “She understands the struggles of hardworking families and genuinely wants to invest in our youth, our neighborhoods, small businesses and everyone that makes a community successful. I like that she has life experience in addition to her professional qualifications.”
“Senator Dance’s support is crucial as I seek to represent the people of my district and bring legislation to Washington that directly reflects their needs,” said Williams.
“When elected, I will work closely with local community activists, city and county officials, and our elected state representatives to ensure that all Virginians have a fair shot at the American Dream,” said Williams.
