Today, Evelyn Morris-Harris, former chair of the Democratic Black Caucus of Virginia, has endorsed Vangie Williams for the Democratic party nomination in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District. Morris-Harris adds to the extensive list of top Democratic officials and party leaders that support Williams’ candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I love what Vangie is doing in the 1st District,” said Morris-Harris. “She is a champion for working people and wants to bring prosperity for Virginians. She has the right message, a strong platform and the experience to beat Wittman in November. I wholeheartedly support Vangie Williams for Congress.”
“Women are leading the way to victory, and I’m excited to be part of this historic moment,” Morris-Harris noted. “Vangie is ready to break down another barrier and become Virginia’s first woman of color to serve in Congress.”
Morris-Harris served as the chair for the Democratic Black Caucus of Virginia (DBCV) for 11 years. In her role, she led the DBCV in its mission to represent the Black constituency of the party and advocated for legislation that addresses the needs of its members.
“I am grateful to have the endorsement of Evelyn Morris-Harris,” said Williams. “To receive the support of a leader and key political figure like Evelyn is an honor. She continuously works to improve the lives of all Virginians and I am inspired by her faith in me to serve the people of the 1st District.
Williams is committed to fighting for an economy that works for everyone and brings good jobs to the district. Her focus is on increasing prosperity and uplifting hardworking families so they have a fair shot at success. By working with citizens, local community activists and elected officials, Williams aims to bring legislation to Washington that directly reflects the needs of people and their communities.
“Vangie’s INVEST initiative is a great plan to give an economic boost to teachers, police officers and military families,” added Morris-Harris. “To get this passed on a national level would be an incredible win for many Americans.”
Williams is proposing to close corporate tax loopholes to help veterans, enlisted military families, safety officers and teachers. Through her INVEST plan, the first $50,000 of earnings of federal income tax will be exempted, providing an immediate boost of up to $6,000 a year.
The groundswell of support for Williams is a sign that people want new leadership in Washington. Williams has received endorsements from members of the Senate of Virginia, the House of Delegates, national organizations, community leaders and citizens. Voters will make their choice on the Democratic candidate to face Rob Wittman in the general election in the primary election on June 12.
